Gala Lucía González Barrios

I’m an artist-researcher from Buenos Aires, working between human-computer interaction, science and technology studies, and participatory design. I study voice: what a voice is, what it is for, and what singing can show us about both. Much of my current work is with people who have had a total laryngectomy, building instruments and methods in which expression and identity count as much as function.

I’m a PhD candidate in the Individualized Interdisciplinary PhD Program at Virginia Tech, advised by Ashley Shew. In Buenos Aires I direct Intercambios Transorgánicos, an arts-science research program at MUNTREF Centro de Arte y Ciencia (UNTREF). I trained in electronic arts, and I have composed for and performed with the Linux Laptop Orchestra (L2Ork) many times.

Soy artista e investigadora, de Buenos Aires. Trabajo entre la interacción humano-computadora, los estudios sociales de la ciencia y la tecnología y el diseño participativo. Investigo la voz: qué es una voz, para qué sirve y qué puede mostrarnos el canto sobre ambas preguntas. Gran parte de mi trabajo actual es con personas laringectomizadas, desarrollando instrumentos y métodos en los que la expresión y la identidad importan tanto como la función.
